COACH CARTER – inspiring true story of high school basketball coach Ken Carter. Making headlines for his emphasis on the importance of academics over athletics, Carter requests all the members of the team to sign contracts, promising to maintain a certain grade point average. When the players fail to live up to this agreement, Carter benches the entire team, locking the gym and forfeiting games to prove his point. This infuriates the community who sees this as a hindrance to the future professional athletic careers of the players. Through hard work and dedication, Carter eventually gets his point across to his team and the community,

Coach Carter’s book is downright simple. The book serves as an outline of Coach Carter’s professional life (mostly about his time as the Coach of the Richmond High School Oilers) and uses that to outline a clear and concise way to success. Early on in the book, Mr. Carter tells us that he has 9 laws that he lives by. These 9 laws then filter out to 12 steps everyone must take to succeed, whether it be personally or professionally. Utilizing his own experience as the fodder, the book is easy to understand because it seems real. Mr. Carter is inspirational and has already changed the way I go about my daily life. In “Yes, Ma’am, No Sir,” Coach Carter states that he goes to bed every night with a pen, pad, and glass of water on his nightstand table. The pen and pad are there so that he can outline the next day and write down any thoughts about the day that has just past. The water is there to purify his body. I, too, now sleep with a pen, pad, and glass of water on my nightstand.

This is not only good reader, but also the type of book to pass on to others in the family. I read 50% of the book when my wife started to read it. I like how down to earth the book is.
